Waiting for the “Perfect” Portfolio? That’s Self-Doubt Talking.

A lot of people ask me: Is it cheating to call myself an interior designer if I’ve only worked on my own home?
Absolutely not.
Your home is the perfect place to start. Think about it: every designer had a first project. And honestly, wouldn't you rather experiment, learn, and make mistakes in your own space rather than on a client’s dime?
Mess up on your own backsplash first—figure out how to measure properly, work with installers, and troubleshoot when things go sideways. Place orders, track deliveries, manage vendors, and handle logistics before you’re responsible for someone else’s home. Learn the process, refine your eye, and gain real confidence—not just theoretical knowledge.
And then? Show it off.
Host a cocktail night. Invite friends and family over and let them see what you’ve done. When they start complimenting your space (and they will), let them know you offer design services. Be bold. Ask for referrals. Let your home be the launchpad for your business.
Your portfolio isn’t a pass/fail test—it’s a living, growing collection of your work. And the only way to build it is to start.
